International School Reduced Scar Laparoscopy

A step ahead of conventional laparoscopy
Founder & Director: Giovanni DAPRI, MD PhD

INTRODUCTION

Minimally Invasive Surgery was introduced in the 1990's to offer patients more advantages than open surgery such as reductions in postoperative pain, abdominal trauma, postoperative infections, hospital stay, improved postoperative comfort, and better cosmetic outcomes.

In 2004, surgeons started to perform Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES), enhancing the cosmetic results and improving the different advantages of Minimally Invasive Surgery. Since NOTES, the umbilicus was considered as a natural scar allowing the access to the abdominal cavity. Hence, the umbilical scar was used as main site to perform single-incision laparoscopy. Moreover, other incisions like the suprapubic scar were adopted allowing the feasibility of other single-incision laparoscopies.

The philosophy was to reduce the number of the trocars and the incision length of each trocar, permitted to perform basic and advanced laparoscopic procedures, commonly performed through 5-9 trocars or by open surgery.

In this video library, each organ is approached by different procedures performed by single-incision laparoscopy or by three-trocar laparoscopy.

MISSION

The International School Reduced Scar Laparoscopy was created by thinking a step ahead of conventional laparoscopy, which is the realization of the same operations as conventional laparoscopy using a single-incision or only three-trocar, more increasing the advantages of Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Different courses using single-incision laparoscopy or three-trocar laparoscopy are endorsed and planned yearly.
